How can I deal with this creditor who has contacted me out of the blue?

I had gone to a dentist in 2005 who screwed up my teeth and to this day it is not completed. I thought my balance due was taken care of and in fact complained against the dentist who I found out had other complaints filed against her and is no longer even at that office. Well today out of the blue their main office (they have a bunch of offices under that dental name) called saying I owe $1,200! I am so angry. What can I do? My credit is perfect and I am scared they're going to ruin it for 7 years to come unfairly.

First, send the collection agency a "Debt Validation Letter". Tell them that you have no recollection of any debt. Make them prove that the debt is yours and that they have a legal right to collect from you. You are also entitled to an itemized statement, breaking down the alleged charges item by item. Also, check your state's statute of limitation on contracts. Since this debt is from 2005, chances are that the statute of limitation has either run out or it is close to doing so. Hope this helps
