30 hours - Technician Assistant

SUMMARY
The purpose of this position is to assist the veterinary technicians with entry level duties in order to promote efficiency of the treatment room. Tech assistants should take direction from the veterinary technicians, the vet tech supervisors or the doctors. The intention of the outlined duties is to provide a guideline indicating which duties a TA may perform, not to provide an exhaustive list. Additional duties may be assigned as training progresses. This is the entry level technician position at Pets Unlimited.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
• To handle all animals humanely, properly and with compassion, including those that may be sick, injured or feral
• To always treat people and animals with respect; to contribute to effective teamwork and practice direct communication
• To follow established procedures governing safe work practices including wearing protective clothing or equipment when necessary
• To assist in maintaining healthy, safe, sanitary, pleasant and clean facilities by participating in cleaning and housekeeping duties
• To assist in the maintenance and inventory of supplies by doing laundry, restocking the treatment room and surgery suites as needed and notifying the Technician Supervisor when supplies are low
• To identify, clean, pack and sterilize surgical and dental instruments
• Assist technicians in venipuncture, examining, handling and treating patients
• To assist doctors as requested with patients in ultrasound
• To provide food, water, clean bedding and clean cages to patients and to assist in treatments for medically boarding animals and non-critical hospitalized patients
• To administer oral and topical medications to medically boarding animals, non-critical hospitalized patients or out-patients
• To assist with treatment of critical patients with supervision
• To assist the surgical and dental technicians with prepping patients for anesthesia and induction
• To care for post-anesthesia patients and monitor their recovery
• To participate in tech appointments including anal gland expression, pedicures, soft paws, administering SQ fluids, etc. as assigned by the Vet Tech Supervisor
• To learn to double check administration of vaccines when requested
• To learn basic venipuncture of the cephalic, saphenous and jugular veins under direct supervision of the Training Coordinator or Vet Tech Supervisor
• To assist with x-rays
• To perform SQ fluid demos in a patient and professional manner
• To give SQ or IM injections under supervision
• To assist in lab and pharmacy duties as requested
• To assist with rooming appointments as requested
• To discharge day patients and routine post-op patients
• To assist in maintaining hospital equipment
• To use the Pets Unlimited Core Values as a guide for behavior and when making decisions and addressing problems
• To perform other duties as assigned by the Vet Tech Supervisor or Doctor

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Ability to lift and move objects and animals weighing up to 50 pounds for short distances and to humanely restrain an animal when necessary.
• Ability to collect vital signs from dogs and cats and interpret the results as normal or abnormal
• Ability to restrain an animal for jugular, cephalic, or saphenous venipuncture
• Proficiency in math to the algebra level
• Ability to restrain an animal for radiographs in the lateral and ventral-dorsal position as well as knowledge of positioning for extremity views.
• Ability to restrain/position an animal for induction of anesthesia and intubation
• Proficient written, verbal and computer skills including the ability to communicate via Outlook email and navigate Word and Excel programs
• Knowledge of proper laboratory sample handling
Education and Experience
At least 2 years college education with an emphasis in science and math. One year of comparable work experience may be substituted for each year of education
Hours: 30 hours, non-exempt position. Daily reporting hours and days of the week vary according to the medical needs of the department. May include nighttime, weekend and holiday work.
