Chase wants to sue my mom?

So my mom just got a bill from Chase, which declared that if she does not the pay the required amount of debt,Chase will take her to court. My mom is a single parent and is going through a lot of financial,as well as personal, tribulations. She is broke and doesnt have enough money to pay the bills(She makes about $250 every 15 days. She works 3 days out of 6 days because she is currently a dental assistant in-training,and so she doesnt earn any money during the other 3 days),let alone $19,000 of credit care debt(Chase,Bank or America,etc...).What will happen if Chase does decide to sue my mom?Can she go to jail?

You don't go to jail for owing people money. Period. You could go to jail if there's fraud involved, but running up a credit card bill doesn't count. Bankruptcy is certainly an option. Quite frankly, if the bank dangled an enormous credit line in front of her without even asking what her financial resources are, sucks to be them for being greedy. Not that bankruptcy is a painless process, but if things are bad enough it may not matter. I'll also point out that threatening people with legal action is a step a lot of companies make fairly early when trying to collect bills, but it's just a threat. Suing people is not cheap for them, especially since the outcome is often some kind of settlement that they could arrive at without the court's help. In fact, one of my credit cards (citibank) explicitly pushes using arbitration instead of courts, so much so that it's probably illegal. Can't give up your right to go to court. The point though is that she can make a deal with them. They'd much rather have her send $20 a month then send the account to the legal system. So before looking at bankruptcy I'd see if they'll talk about options.
