The only thing I've signed up for thus far is SGLI. Do I need to sign up for a separate policy (life) for my wife and kids (FSGLI)? I've signed up for the max amount for myself ($400k). I plan on signing up for Tri-Care this weekend at drill...I was told that it is free once I go active so how will that work? Will they automatically quit charging me? Also, do my family and I get dental and vision while I'm on active duty during BMT and tech school (I'll be gone for about 8 months all together). Thanks for your input folks!

DAN! Update your status in DEERS with your personnel section before you enter Active Duty. This will show you in the TRICARE system as on Active-Duty and monthly premiums will cease. Once you are off AD and back at your base, you do the same when off AD and you can continue on TRICARE, but you have to pay the monthly premiums at that time. The price did go down however (almost in half) just a couple months ago so it is very affordable. $41/month for individuals and about $150 for family coverage. The previous post about dental is correct, family has another plan they purchase but it is reasonable as far as rates go. Other benefits are family seperation pay($250/month) and use of base facilities such as the commisary adn BX, although an Active Duty base with those facilities is not too close to you. Whiteman AFB would be the closest.
