Long story short, when I was six months pregnant my dentist told me that I had advanced gum disease and would probably lose my baby. Since I'd always taken good care of my teeth this was a shock to me. I went on to get a second opinion (and have a healthy baby) but I now want to file a complaint against this dentist. I got copies of my dental records from that practice and the new one where I go now; I just want to know if I should hire a lawyer too and go after punitive damages or if they ever settle monetarily as a part of the state complaint process.

Generally speaking, you can only get punitive damages if you have some underlying actual monetary damages, in this case seems like you don't. File a complaint with the BBB and with whatever agency licenses dentists in your state. Also, complain to your insurance company, they may investigate and find out that this dentist and has been charging for unneccesary procedures and get money from them. However, if your main objective is to get money for yourself, I'd say you are out of luck
