Was the dentist wrong? or is this my problem?

I had a wisdom tooth growing and was in so much pain. Scared and nervous, I found a dentist I thought was very comforting and caring. I brought him all my information on my new dental benefit plan. After going through it with his assistant, and explaining I had $1500 that was covered, he talked me into getting all my silver fillings changed to white as well as getting another wisdom tooth removed too. I thought it was a good idea as I was only going to be paying $340.00 out of my pocket. We did the work just over a week ago, and I have just recieved my bill in the mail for almost $1000.00. I find out that i was actually only covered for the wisdom teeth and not all the fillings. I cannot afford to pay this and I know that if I knew this, I would have never got the fillings as i did not need them. I have no idea what to do! I feel that the dentist should be responsibe as i was missinformed! Am I wrong??

They can say that changing silver filling to white filling is a cosmetic procedure, not a medical procedure. And medical/dental insurance only cover medical needs, not cosmetic needs. Medical insurance can give you discounts on cosmetic process, but it does not cover it completely. That's why medical insurance covers annual eye check up but not lasik procedure. But then again, the medical insurance / dental plan should cover the switch because of the toxic in the silver filling. Your dentist might be lying to you because the math don't make sense. He say you are only paying 20%. 20% of what gives you $1000? It's definitely not $1500. And if you show him your dental benefit plan, should he know that you want the procedure to be affordable? I got my wisdom tooth remove in Manhattan, NY (a wealthy area) and it only cost $100 per tooth. I think your dentist is overpricing it. Nevertheless, call your insurance company and talk to them about it. If you're lucky, the insurance company will side with you and deal with the dentist. Also, file a compliant with the court if it don't work out. If you're going to pay, never pay cash or check. Pay with American Express Blue Cash or some reliable credit card because if anything, you have evidences.
