I've already had the wisdom tooth and next molar on that side pulled so I really don't want to lose it too (down to 2 molars on bottom) and the chipped one isn't even the one farthest back. What's the cheapest way to stop the pain and deterioration till I can afford a crown? Can't they just do a filling ( I don't care about cosmetics) What's a root canal anyway, and why do they do them? I called the University dental school and it was $135 just to say Hi, and a crown was going to be $1,700+. Ouch!

Wow! What dental school is that? My outside office fee is only 1300... do I need to raise my fees? I'm in the San Francisco Bay area, which is a pretty expensive place to be. Get the tooth checked and diagnosed. Even if it eventually needs a crown, a filling can usually be done as a longterm temporary patch.
