Here's the deal. I am 21 and recently got married. I am a full time student and have one year left in my undergraduate. My wife is graduating in a month with her dental assisting degree. My plan has always been to go to medical school. However, after getting married, I have been wondering if this is the best path for me. Both my wife and I are interested in starting a family within the next five years. If I go to medical school, it means that she will have to work full time to support us until I am finished with school. However, we both agree that we do not want to have to have our child in day care full time. If I go to PA school I can be done in three years and making a decent income. I just am not sure if I will be entirely content with this career choice. Any advice? I would prefer to hear from those who have personal experience in medical/PA fields. Thanks.

I normally only help with people who have no idea what to do about medical school or how to get there....but your story is very similar to my family. First things... I believe you are aware of the commitment that is required for either program. However I believe and would put my full support behind your medical degree. A PA is a wonderful degree and very useful but if you enter it because it is shorter you may regret it later. My father had all three of us and my mother (an RN) and went to med school at 40. He even did a fellowship for cardiology (8 years after med school). I still saw him and I was five when he started. Sure it was hard on the kids when dad on call for days at a time in residency but by the time I was 14 we lived in a nice home with a set schedule. I am now in medical school and we have many many many married students both male and female. One of the third years even just had her first kid. If medical school is your dream then journey may be longer but in the end you AND your family will be proud of the experience. She may have to work full time (money is always good.....) but loans can more than cover living expenses. I have no income as I am single/unmarried and thus all of my school and rent must come from loans. The fact is you'll pay them back....... good luck in your endeavors
